James Baldwin wrote “People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them” in his essay Stranger in the Village as a part of his book Notes of a Native Son.
I am a little torn this morning after rereading the essay I want there to be a way forward, a way to escape the traps of history but I guess right now I am assuming that all of our histories are negative and we need to release ourselves. But at the same time I know our histories are not all bad and our histories play a part in driving our actions, good and bad. I could be in my feelings right now just misunderstanding the entirety of what James Baldwin was saying in his essay.
But what if, we accept our histories as they are without judgment and move forward with a simple plan, be better, accept and treat others better and by doing so make the world a little better place for each other.
